Newtown shooting discussion thread: No flames, no trolls, no MRAs

Because the post I just put up on the Newtown shooting is so troubling and disturbing, I am setting up this separate thread so people can discuss the shooting without having to deal with or think about MRAs.

  1. Argenti Aertheri

“Purely medicinal, you understand ;) ” — Completely understand :)

“By the way, I meant to sympathise …” — Thank you, for all the trolls here, part of why I’m back is because y’all remind me that there are good people out there. And I’m sorry you have racist assholes harassing you.

  2. @Katz, thanks.
I actually have minimal mental health stuff per se (really mild dysthymic depression), but there’s been a lot coming out about how the killer might have been autistic, including allegedly something his own brother said, and I am on the spectrum. So even though MOST PEOPLE know that autism doesn’t make you kill people, there’s still the old “they have no empathy” tropes getting brought out yet again, and that’s hard to take.

The worst thing about talking about this stuff is you feel like you’re taking attention away from the actual victims and just complaining about how this tragedy affects you personally. But then, the people who STARTED the whole discussion of the killer’s ability status are the people who switched the spotlight over from the victims, where it should be, not autistics and people with mental health issues trying to defend themselves.

  3. Better that than racist sinuses and exploding right wingers… Hey I’m awake and the cold meds made me dream I was in a hospital and all the nurses were ring-tailed lemurs. Best hospital ever.

  4. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

    Way cool hospital, cloudiah!

I saw a kids’ book (I think - coulda been a dvd) today about Ninja Meerkats. Too funny.

  5. Um, the first part of that comment was aimed at David’s response to Nat, in case that wasn’t clear. Did I mention cold meds? OTC, but those plus about 14 hours of sleep make my brain a little funny.

  6. Isn’t it weird how you feel less rather than more coherent when you oversleep?

  7. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

Oversleeping does that to me, too. The worst is waking up during a dream, though. I might be really near waking, but if I’m in that phase when the alarm goes off, I’m groggy for hours.

  8. When that happens hilarious things follow, like me turning to the person next to me and going “hurry up, we have to rescue the squirrels!”. Or the time that I was having a nightmare about being surrounded by sharks in the open water and when I woke up I wouldn’t let my boyfriend go pee (because the sharks would get him if he stepped out of the bed/boat, you see).

  9. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

LOL if you have too many dreams like that, you might have to get a gazunda for any bed-guests!

(Gazunda = chamber pot. It gazunda the bed.)

  10. In related news, my cat blew a snot bubble. I think she’s sick too :(

  11. Sorry to hear about your cat :(

  12. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

Katz, that’s no good! I hope she doesn’t have cat flu or anything. :(

  13. I don’t know, I’ve never owned a cat before. I think that if a cat just has a clear runny nose, that’s not usually a problem? That’s what she has now. (But cat owners, please advise.)

  14. Hi, so now I can’t sleep so i woke up and tried to read but couldn’t so came back to manboobz hoping for trollz and lulz.

katz, if your kitty is otherwise fine, eating, drinking, pooping (in the right place), etc. it’s probably just a cold. if there’s lots of sneezing or it lasts a while, or any other disturbing changes, might be a respiratory infection that needs antibiotics. If you can afford it, it might not be a bad idea to make a visit to the vet; if money is short, wait and be watchful for more symptoms.

~cloudiah has owned many cats over the last 30 years, but should not be mistaken for a vet

  15. Also, sleep overdose + cold meds = me asking “Are you guys all pandas? ‘Cos I’m just saying it would be cool to be having this discussion with pandas.”

  16. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

I’m glad you mentioned colds, cloudiah. None of ours have had them, only Magnus with his ‘flu, so I tend to associate runny noses with that.

  17. Boy had terrible flu last year. I went in at one point with a cold flannel for his head and found him staring in fascination at the end of the bed. He was hallucinating that he could see little anthromorphic chickpeas wearing wee uniforms who were there to fix holes in space and time. That was a bit scary, but he seemed to enjoy it. He couldn’t eat houmous for a month though.

  18. I just finished trying to have a sane talk about this with a gun owner. I said that we as a country need to address both the lack of registration and regulation of our guns, and the horrible lack of help for people with mental illness in the US. She agreed, but with the caveat that we do nothing to prevent her from getting more autos and semi-autos; gotta protect her family.

This was the least crazy convo I have had about guns, even after this goddamn nightmare.

I want to scream, but I don’t have any private spaces available for that today.

  19. Good grief. How many guns does she thinks it takes to “protect her family”? And how many times do people with guns (if they’re locked away as they’re supposed to be) actually get to use them in the event of a break-in?

I just read a rabbi’s tribute to one of the victims as saying the child was just “in the wrong place at the wrong time”. I HATE that phrase. It makes it sound like he walked onto train tracks, and is so close to being victim-blaming. Hello, that child, all those children, were exactly where they were supposed to be, when they were supposed to be there, and were targeted by a murderer!

  20. He was hallucinating that he could see little anthromorphic chickpeas wearing wee uniforms who were there to fix holes in space and time.

…I want to catch what he has.

  21. I laughed harder than is probably healthy for me right now at the hummus remark.
