Hurricane Sandy Open Thread

Let me second Cloudia in the comments, and say that I hope all East Coast Manboobzers (and their loved ones, and everyone else in the area) is safe and sound and braced for Sandy.

East coasters, use the comments below to check in and let us know how you are! The rest of you, discuss!

  1. Actually I think maybe we should allow him to post, but have all his comments appear as links to or quotes from feminist and anti-racist sites, so that he tries to go all “blah blah New Orleans, LOTF!” and his comment appears as a quote from Audre Lorde.

Obviously David probably doesn’t have time to do that kind of thing, but it would be funny!

  2. popcornculturejunkie

    ^^ This :D

  3. @Cassandra: I like that idea. Or we could auto-embed a daily kitten at the bottom of every comment Otis makes. That last effort from him would have been much easier to take if followed by a chaser of squee.

  4. Otis the Sweaty

Over the five papers 70% of the bylines were by men, despite about 70% of journalists being women.

    More evidence of male superiority.

    I’m done for the night.

  5. popcornculturejunkie

Actually, I can come up with something better. Whenever he tries to post his usual racist crap, it’ll come out in the form of a kitteh picture. After all, we MBZrs can’t get enough of our kittehs. :)

  6. popcornculturejunkie

Damn it, nerdypants, you beat me to it :(

  7. Oh Otis, you’re one cherry-picking douchbadger, you know that?

    I’m done for the night.

    Thank fuck.

  8. @popcornculturejunkie: Hey, “great minds” and all that :-)

  9. Ever notice how male supremacists are actually really lazy and ineffectual? I did, just now. Also always.

  10. popcornculturejunkie

I’m not going to count on Odious to leave just yet…I’m sure he’ll come up with some more amazing fuckwittery in a bit. :p

@ nerdypants: You have a point there :D

  11. Alex - thanks for the info (I just texted it to my boss) and the good wishes!!

  12. More evidence of male superiority.

    I’m done for the night.

Or, you know, men getting more credit for less work. (Which is what I see in newsrooms.)

  13. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

Voting for Otis and Owly to be on moderation for the night.

Also for both of them to eat shit and die.

  14. Rahu, they blow up a lot where I live. The sound and the light can be freaky, but they often cause no damage or minimal damage. I can’t be sure that is what your boss saw, but I did see the sky light up on the weather report and I would guess that is what he was talking about.
    Good luck!

  15. Well, I mean no damage other than the power dying and the transformer being in pieces.

  16. Alex - thanks! Yes, I’m sure that’s what he saw - it matches his description exactly.

  17. Fuck moderation, Otis and NWO should be banned. They clearly have no boundaries and cannot tell when their brand of bullshit is not necessary, wanted, or welcome.

  18. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

I’ve been wondering a while why NWO wasn’t banned long since. Some of the older threads where he’s making outright attacks against members here are unbelievable. Or would have been, before I saw this sort of stuff.

  19. Once trolls reveal themselves to be trolls and not just people that hold a different viewpoint they should be perma banned. Wanting to engage in conversation, play devil’s advocate or debate is one thing, trolling is just fuckery and attention whoring for it’s own sake.

  20. Rahu, I just found this video via Weather.com and I bet this is what he saw:

  21. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

The devil’s advocate thing falls right into trolling on this site. It’s only a few days since we saw one who proclaimed himself to be playing “intellectual” (pfft) games and trolling with his devil’s advocate garbage. It boiled down to the usual shit from MRAs: women’s experiences don’t count, our words don’t count, and we have no right to exist except as receptacles waiting for a dick. I’ve very little time for devil’s advocacy on the sort of subjects that are the mainstays here.

  22. Yeah, devil’s advocacy is usually a shitshow from the jump around here. Like Kitteh’s said, the topics just don’t lend themselves well to that and devolve into fuckery.

  23. Alex - VERY impressive! Thanks for the vid!!! My apartment has a great view…of the brick wall of the building next door, so the most I’m really getting of this storm is the loud wind.

  24. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

Hellkell - and it usually turns out to be a sockpuppet doing it anyway. Which in some cases has the entertainment value of a meltdown, but that’s about all there is to be said for it.

  25. Yeah, no trolls in the are-people-all-right thread, please.

  26. I’ve put Otis on permanant moderation and won’t let through any more of his crap in this or any thread. NWO is also on permanant moderation, though I usually let through his comments because no one takes anything he says seriously. But I’ll keep him out of this thread.

  27. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

And a kitty high-five for David!

  28. Wow, okay, thought storm was over, been quiet for a few hours. Wind is now worse than it was earlier in the day, and not letting up - steady blowing, not gusts. Stom must have turned back.

  29. Wow! Just wow! Our thoughts (and kitty purrs and ferret snuffles) are with the East coast (and Midwest) Boobzers. Hopefully this will pass sooner, rather than later.

Mother Nature must be in a really shit mood this weekend. Tsunamis, hurricanes… damn.

And thanks for neutralizing the troll problem, David. This really just isn’t the time or place for their shenanigans.

  30. I’ve put Otis on permanant moderation and won’t let through any more of his crap in this or any thread.

So am I correctly reading this as a ban? Because that would be the best thing ever.

  31. Mother Nature must be in a really shit mood this weekend. Tsunamis, hurricanes… damn.

    And bushfires here in Queensland.

  32. House collapsed, I’m a zombie now, just in time for halloween. I hope they still let me vote.

Morbid humor aside, me and just about everybody else I know in meatspace seems to be fine (minus the one woman I know from campaigning who got a really bad spider bite, but that’s not storm related). We still got power and all that good stuff.

    Thanks for caring.

  33. So, the storm turned and didn’t quite hit high enough north to hit me. But from the sounds of it everybody south of me is having a very bad day.

  34. Howardbann1ster - I think it’s supposed to turn east again after turning and running north a bit - will you be ok?

  35. I’m still in Ohio. It’s worse, actually, than if we’d made it home. I have no idea what happened at our place. I have no way to help. I can’t do anything, and no idea what it’s going to be like to get home (JFK to New Jersey). Friends who decided to drive back… they are in Penn somewhere, doing alright. Now sure what the residual storm will do to travel plans.

  36. Oh, and as to the Bounty… I know one of the people who was rescued. Sad day all around.

  37. @Rahu: we’ll probably see some flooding. Just canceled a meeting where I’d have to do a lot of driving tomorrow… feeling pretty good about that.

  38. Good luck getting home pecunium, and I hope your property/family/friends are okay.
Where I am it is quiet now - overcast, but no rain since this morning and no wind. Lots of closed roads due to downed trees and wires.

  39. We are up enough/inland enough that I think the surge wasn’t a problem. Secondary flooding… who knows. Wind damage? Who knows. I’ll try to email neighbors, but we know that the area has lost power (one of our party stopped being able to remote to his computer). Don’t know if it affected our place.

  40. Good luck to all who went through the storm, and now face sorting through the aftermath. My sister was stranded safely here with us in CA, but her husband has reported in from CT and while they have a bunch of downed tree limbs they have no major damage. And my friend on Long Island is also okay, but no electricity for the foreseeable future. She and her family might go join my b-in-l once the roads are passable.

Apparently the storm also devastated Haiti on its way here (quite soon after Isaac, too) — so if you’re able, you might consider making a donation to organizations that are helping all over the Caribbean.

  41. @howardbann1ster - good decision. :-)

  42. @Polliwog -

This is very late, sorry, but I just saw the Joss Whedon vid you posted - I LOVE IT - THANK YOU!!!!

    Sincerely,

    A Total Whedonite

  43. reports from home… no apparent damage to the house.

  44. Yay! My parents in DC didn’t suffer any flooding or house damage. I am relieved.

Now just waiting to hear back from my ex who recently moved back to NYC from Belgium…

  45. and yay, she’s all right!

  46. Glad the East coasters here escaped major damage! The East coast Futrelles are all fine, including my sister in Manhattan. (While big chunks of NYC are underwater, other parts were relatively unscathed.)

What a gigantic mess. Cleanup is going to take a long time.

  47. Question for anyone who knows people who’re in Manhattan - how are the people who live in tall buildings doing? I’ve been wondering what would happen to them if the lower floors flooded, since they’d presumably be safe on the higher floors but not necessarily able to leave the building?

  48. Diogenes The Cynic

    Cassandra,

Powers out. I can’t get in contact with my NY peeps. Cell phones are spotty, and are only being kept on at intervals to preserve their juice.

  49. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

I’ve found out my friend who lives in Ontario is okay, which is a relief. Don’t know about those in Maine and Pennsylvania yet. Glad to hear from all of you who’re safe!

  50. Not unless they can swim I would think Cassandra although I have no idea how fast the flooding will recede from the streets and subways of NY.

For those who need a smile Henri The Cat on All Hallow’s Eve.

    http://cheezburger.com/43922433

  51. Just heard that a friend’s Red Hook apartment sustained severe water damage and will be uninhabitable for the near future. She and her family had evacuated so they’re safe, and they have temporary shelter, but they lost lots of irreplaceable stuff like photos and artwork (mostly their own). o_o

  52. The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

Henri is one pissed-off looking kitteh …

Cloudiah, that’s rotten about your friend’s home. Reminds me of what someone who survived both fire and flood here said - that they’d take the fire over the flood, because of the irreparable, ongoing damage done by rot, mold and the like after a flood, and the sheer stench of the mud. (I presume they didn’t lose their house outright in the fires.)

  53. Aw, I love Henri, especially since my current kitty is a tuxedo.

  54. Taking advantage of open thread to admit that I am very tempted to create a Reddit account so that I can post this r/mr, make popcorn, and watch the ensuing shitstorm. What the LA Times unsurprising doesn’t cover in their story is that the woman-only night is also open to trans folks, which is cool.

  55. @cloudiah: how dare they! Talking about bicycles and mechanics and other everyday things, knowing all the time that they have ladybits! They should leave the care and maintenance of the penny-farthing to their fathers and/or husbands! /snark

  56. Oh god, I also see from that LA Times story that The Mouse is set to buy out Darth Lucas for $4 BILLION.

Looking forward to another round of Star Wars movies because Disney has to make their investment work! Although if they actually had a good plot and dialogue that wasn’t terrible ….

  57. Star Wars 10 - The Return of Minnie?

  58. Personally, the only way I’d ever watch a new Star Wars movie is if it was made by someone other than George Lucas. Anything The Mouse does with the franchise can’t possibly be worse than Attack of the Clones.

Anyway, everyone rent their garments and beat their chests when Disney bought Marvel, and then we got The Avengers. So I’m staying optimistic.

  59. Glad to hear that everyone is pretty much OK! Sorry to hear about your friend’s apartment, Cloudiah. I know how sad I would be if I lost a bunch of my artwork.

  60. I heard about the buyout of Lucasfilm, and I don’t know if Emperor Palpatine just decided to reveal that he’s Disney’s CEO.
emilygoddess did bring up some good reasons why this isn’t as bad as I might think. There’s also the fact that Gary Kurtz, not George Lucas, produced “A New Hope” and “The Empire Strikes Back” and also coached the actors. It’s one of the reasons, I suppose, why the prequels weren’t stellar material (pardon my pun).

  61. @Biot: Apparently there’s footage of people working on Phantom Menace who are just too scared of losing their jobs to say no to Lucas. I’ve only heard about this secondhand, but I’m not surprised. When someone is that successful, there’s a lot of pressure not to ride them too hard for fear they’ll take their success and make a lot of money for someone else. It happens to authors so much there’s a trope for it.
