Will Ferrell, Conscious Man
Do you remember the Conscious Men and “Dear Woman,” their little video manifesto/apology to women? If not, please go read my post on them and/or watch at least a minute or two of their creepy, cringeworthy video – you may not be able to take much more. Then watch this: Will Ferrell’s spot-on parody of their video.
Here’s the original “Dear Woman” video:

I generally don’t even use the dryer. It’s generally better for your clothes. I just hang everything around my room.
Since I really only post once a day or per thread, I guess I just wasted it on talking about laundry. Hmm.
Thanks!
He thinks they are so cool. I like reading them but I don’t really understand the Magic rules like he does.
^^
that was for Ami
It’s always Slavey in Philadelphia.
So, slavey is now saying a couple things:
1) We are racist, because some women led the KKK (as opposed to all the men that did as well, does that make him racist?)
2) Women didn’t get pregnant when they were raped, before contraception was invented and used.
2 alt) Because women used to falsely accuse black men of rape, we are somehow racist
3) It is impossible to grow up in a bad neighborhood and be a racist.
Blech… right on, slavey, keep digging that bigoted hole you’re in. Good luck getting out.
Actually, NWO, women can’t be members of the KKK, they can only be members of the Women’s Auxilory. Which shows just how much you know about that sort of thing. In many ways though, this is one of your few areas of blatant ignorance which is a bit of a relief. You aren’t a Klansman, at least. (It is a sad day when your opponent not being in the Klan is one of the few marks in their favor, but I think AWS doesn’t even get that much.)
@NWO:
Hell it almost looks like a mother/daughter lesbian picture.
You obviously are into more, ah, interesting porn than I.
Let me get this straight… getting your clothes to the laundry, loading the machine, moving them to the dryer, taking them back to your room and folding them took a total of ten minutes.
Right…
Even if it was just folding that took ten minutes what that tells me is you weren’t washing all that many clothes.
That or your innumeracy extend to your sense of time.
In case you missed it NWO, would you like to live in Iceland.? Age of Consent is 15, and the rate of divorce is 1.7 per 1.000.
There was one part about women and history that struck me as anti-feminist
this comes off way more as a satire of women’s ridiculous “equality” issues instead of the backhanded compliments and creepy paternalism of the original.
I kind of had some second thoughts about some of this as well
I didn’t watch the original, or the parody (the original one, because blood pressure), the parody because I’m not fond of Will Ferrell
And people wonder why feminists are generally seen as dour, humorless, perpetually-offended killjoys.
I honestly found the video hilarious, and I’m not even that big a fan of Will Ferrell. I’m wondering, is there anything you DO find funny?
@Ion:
If you don’t laugh at this, or at least smile, you have no heart or soul.
There are two more, each as adorable as the last. You have been warned, your squee meter might not be able to take it.
Uh oh.
xD
I find Kirby pretty funny… esp after smex when he makes those weird noises…
>_>
oh wait I wasn’t supposed to say that out loud…
xD
@Ami:
Didn’t I break up with you yesterday? I… I don’t think that’s me making those noises…
I didn’t say you made them TODAY…
they linger xD
And we’re unbroken up neways xD
I’m the woman, so I decide these things. You dun get your half of the cat back tho… xD
Sure, it’s cute. It’s also the kind of thing my mom would email me. Are you also fans of Family Circus? Never mind, my question’s been answered.
Mr. Fluffles… NOOOoooooo!
I’m a big fan of Marmaduke!
Best. Comic. Evar.
@Ion:
Oh good, then you know I don’t really read it much, nor care for its humor. Though.. since I haven’t talked to anybody about my indifference towards it… You must be psychic! O___O Quick, tell me how many fingers I’m holding up right now!
(Here’s a hint: it isn’t 4)
Ion has a cool mom :3
@Kirbywarp I suspect he’s a big fan… and he paints black rectangles behind him wherever he goes xD
actually that would be a pretty hilarious cosplay… like a sheet of clear plastic with black rectangles painted on it, trailing you xD
With a little whiteboard that people can draw witty slogans on! I feel like this needs to happen…
I also like how one person was representing all feminists and now Kirbywarp is xD
Okay Kirby, while you hold the sceptre, you better enact your policies!
Can you guess how many I’m holding up? Hint - it’s just one. Can you guess which one?
@Ami:
Oooh ooh oooh… Ummm….
*hem hem*
*crickets*
crap…
@Ion:
If you’re feeling randy, I can point you to some websites that will help you out. Just, please, there are some things that are TMI.
Now that we are talking about parodies. I copied a hate screed from a blog, and slightly
changed a few words in one of the copies.
One version looks like it is written by a feminist, and the other looks like it’s from and MRA.
Can you guess which is the real one, and which is the mockup ?
Bonus question: Do you think they looks equally batshit insane ?
A) In current politics, liberal and conservative, choice only matters when it benefits women. More importantly, when women have one of their three priorities filled – money, orgasm, or ego. That’s the ONLY time men’s choices are favored, because our value is forever viewed in relation to the feminist agenda. Men who choose to be separatists, anti-feminist, or sex negative are always vilified as right wing, religious nuts, moral crusaders, or misogynists.

Personally I didn’t think there was enough parody for it to be funny - it was just too similar to the original, retained too much of the creepy and didn’t amp it up enough to be ridiculous. I kinda laughed a little at the bit about not shaving and fetid swamps and the bit about being sorry men died before being able to apologize, but pretty much everything else seemed like it could have been in the original and not been out of place.
And the original was uber-creepy. I got through about 2min 45sec before I had to turn it off.
Isn’t jerking off thinking about someone naked a compliment? I mean, kinda creepy to TELL someone, but if you found out…some other way, why would it hurt so bad?
Ion asked: Is there anything [I] find funny?
TONS of stuff!
All of Terry Pratchett (I have to be careful where I read his stuff because only so many places will allow shrieks of laughter in public)!
Molly Ivins!
Florence King!
The Marx Brothers-all their films, but I’m a special fan of Harpo!
Esther Friesner’s comic fantasy novels!
Bill Watterson’s CALVIN AND HOBBES!!!!!!!
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert 4EVAH!
And see, there are actually some MEN in that list.
I tend to prefer verbal humour over physical humours, so I’m a fan of puns as well.
It is true I don’t find men behaving badly on or off screen funny-but as I did say, I thought Will Ferrell did a FANTASTIC job in STRANGER THAN FICTION (which has some hilarious parts, especially the parts with Dustin Hoffman as an English professor), just as I thought Jim Carrey was brilliant in ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF A SPOTLESS MIND, though I cannot stand to even watch the previews of his other films (I’m sure he’s brilliant at what he does-I just find that sort of comedy boring-and cringe inducing-for example, I also do not find the Three Stooges in the last amusing).
@luke123:
Welcome back.. I’d say b) is the actual one, it seems kind of odd for an MRA to complain that being sex-negative is vilified, and they don’t normally say that women desire ego. What are you trying to prove exactly, that you are bad at parody?
If its that feminists can be extreme too, then welcome to the world of radfems. Hooray. They exist. But feminists as a group don’t always agree with them, and you have people on this very blog who are willing to demonstrate this. (As opposed to the “extreme MRAs,” whom nobody seems to be willing to contradict even as they distance themselves)
p.s. to Ion-forgot to say, DOH, that I find a whole lotta what gets posted here hilarious-David’s OPs are always good for a snicker, some for full-fledged belly laughs, although a few are downright horrifying (arms and the man), and I enjoy that-and as even additional frosting on the case (mmmm love frosting slurp), many of the commenters (not all of whom identify as feminists, btw, even though they have tattoos, imagine that) are hilarious-witty responses, a lot of geeky and nerds references, a lot of commenting about cultural issues, along with the troll takedowns. I started reading over here occasionally after one of David’s post was linked on a feminist blog, then I added it to my DW feed list, then I started commenting, now I’m hooked like a very hooked thing and commenting more than I ever have on ANY blog (I’m usually a LJ/DW girl to tell you the truth). So right here, lots of wit and humor although some of it falls into the category of laughing to avoid crying.
@Kirby
Yes, B is the right one. Here is the link http://ballbuster4ever.wordpress.com/2011/05/06/choice/
Just goes to show that MRA’s and feminists have so much in common. They should be totally in love which each other.
MRA’s are pretty much anti-sex too. For example here http://www.the-spearhead.com/2011/04/21/how-the-liberated-feminist-slut-created-the-pick-up-artist/
If I understand correctly, sex is only ok in holy matrimony like in the good old days, or when used by PUA’s to get back at women for being sluts.
And the radfems would wholeheartedly agree that men only have sex with women to hurt them. Penis in vagina sex and pregnancy are a male invention specially designed to harm them. But they go ever further than the MRA’s in that they also don’t accept marriage.
I don’t know of any radfems that lit themselves on fire, and if there have been any, I certainly haven’t heard of any feminists calling them martyrs for the cause. So no. As extreme as the speech of radfems can be at times, they do not go further than MRAs.
If MRAs are to MRActivism like the radfem are to feminism, then where are the MRAs like us? o_O Or are WE the MRAs like us? (like Ozy, Holly, Me, etc)
@Ithiliana what no lurve for teh Ami? D: (i’m kidding :3 )
“Just goes to show that MRA’s and feminists have so much in common.” First of all, radfems are a specific subset, not a representative sample. Secondly, reality matters. Men are and have historically been overrepresented in political and legal systems positions of power. Women are actually overrepresented in sex trafficking victims. Women are actually routinely denied access to and rights over issues of their bodily autonomy. These statements would only be equal if the histories and social situations were equal, which they are not. Sort of like how the Cherokee asserting that the US government forced them on a virtual death march in the past and has continuously made attempts at genocide of the Cherokees is true, but the converse claim, that the Cherokee forced the US government on a virtual death march in the past and has continuously made attempts at genocide of the US government would be a load of horseshit. While I am not a fan of radfem ideas in general, this false equivocation business is nonsense.
*flings self dramatically at Ami’s feet*
You KNOW you are one of my favorite posters! I was at work and didn’t want to try to name names, and backtrack and spend more time readiig here than writing an abstact for an anthology.
But actually, going srs for a moment, I think my admiration for your compassion exceeds my admiration for your wit and humor-because, wow, you have so much and such an ability to express it!
I was a radical feminist back in the early 1980s when I first became a feminist-and while I’ve rejected much of their theories (relating to transphobia, race, and gender essentialism), they are certainly not representative of all feminisms.
Hell, they didn’t even burn bras (that was made up by media).
http://www.snopes.com/history/american/burnbra.asp
And despite claims by later feminists that “all 70s/radfems were racist” covers up the very effective collaborative work and the feminists of color (Florynce Kennedy, Toni Cade Bambara, Angela Davis) and white feminists (Kennedy toured with Gloria Steinem, for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florynce_Kennedy)
Racism still exists in white feminist groups today-why wouldn’t it? We’re a racist culture.
Basic rule: what actually happened in the past was much more complex and complicated and nuanced than any historical narrative can convey.
many of the commenters (not all of whom identify as feminists, btw, even though they have tattoos, imagine that)
Hey, I resemble that remark!
Srsly, I don’t have to be a feminist to see that MRAs got a whole lot of loonies. And to enjoy laughing at the loonies
Plymouth
Do you have knowledge of mra’s or is this blog your main source of information? Im my experience, reasonable feminists are behind the mrm on many of the issues, see the site “feminist critics” for example.. but anyway.
David Futrelle. are the conscious men not a more extreme version of you?
Plymouth: my partner of 17 or so years is not a feminist!
A lot of it has to do with how one defines feminist, and other stuff, but somehow we manage to live together very well.
And yes, mocking misogyny does not require official feminist cred (I tell her some of the stuff I read here for laffs!)
Surfa, given that I disagree with virtually everything the conscious men say and find them creepy as fuck, I would say that no, they are not a more extreme version of me. I think the main things I have in common with them are that they, like me, are male and speak English.
And given that the overwhelming majority of MRAs are anti-feminist, I would say that very few feminists are “behind” the MRM. I would also say that virtually every feminist I know cares a lot about men’s rights and men’s issues generally (as do I); they just don’t support the reactionary MRM as it exists today.
Also, the folks behind Feminist Critics are not, you know, feminists, nor do they represent the MRM. Nor is it a site loved by many MRAs. It’s a unique site. I think it’s good that the Feminist Critics actually encourage real debate. The stuff I’ve read there is a mixed bag, some of the site’s critiques of feminists are spot on, others not so much.
Surfa - This blog is my main source of laffs. I don’t really care beyond that. I’m not here to do research. And outside of fight club I don’t talk about fight club. (ok, occasionally I mention something especially funny to my fiance).
